Which Powerstroke Fuel Filter Do You Actually Need? The Complete FD-4615 vs FD-4625 vs FD-4616 Guide

You typed your year and model into the search bar, found a fuel filter that looked right, and hit order. Two days later the box arrives, you crawl under the truck, and it does not fit. Wrong thread pattern. Wrong housing style. Wrong generation entirely. Now you are stuck with a filter you cannot return because the box is open, and your truck still needs the correct one.

This happens constantly with Ford Super Duty fuel filters because Ford changed the filter design across every Powerstroke generation. The part numbers look nearly identical — FD-4615 versus FD-4625 is just ten digits apart — but they are completely different filters that will not interchange. Install the wrong one and you get leaks, air in the fuel system, and zero protection for your injectors.

Here is the definitive breakdown so you never order the wrong filter again.

2003–2007 Ford 6.0 Powerstroke: FD-4616

The 6.0 Powerstroke in the F250, F350, F450, F550, and Excursion uses the Motorcraft FD-4616 fuel filter set. This kit includes both an upper fuel bowl filter and a lower lifter pump filter, and it replaces the older FD-4604 which Ford discontinued and updated.

The OEM cross-reference number is 3C3Z-9N184-CB. If you still see an FD-4604 listed somewhere, do not buy it — the FD-4616 is the current replacement with improved filtration media.

The 6.0 Powerstroke is particularly sensitive to fuel quality because of its high-pressure oil injection system. A clogged or degraded fuel filter causes hard starts, rough idle, and loss of power under load — symptoms that many owners misdiagnose as injector failure when the filter is the actual culprit. Changing your ford 6.0 diesel fuel filter every 10,000 to 15,000 miles is the most effective way to prevent expensive HPOP and injector problems down the road.

If you own a 2003–2005 Excursion with the 6.0 diesel, you use the same FD-4616 filter as the pickups. No difference in fitment.

2008–2010 Ford 6.4 Powerstroke: FD-4617

The 6.4 Powerstroke generation moved to the Motorcraft FD-4617 fuel filter. This is a completely different design from the 6.0 filter and is not compatible with earlier or later trucks. The OEM number is BC3Z-9N184-C and it fits the F250, F350, F450, and F550 Super Duty models from those three model years.

The 6.4 Powerstroke fuel filter often gets overlooked because this generation had a shorter production run, but the engine is equally dependent on clean fuel. The 6.4 uses a compound turbo setup that demands consistent fuel pressure, and a restricted filter directly impacts turbo response and throttle sensitivity.

2011–2016 Ford 6.7 Powerstroke: FD-4615

This is where the confusion really starts. The first-generation 6.7 Powerstroke uses the Motorcraft FD-4615, which is a dual-element fuel filter kit containing both the frame-mounted and engine-mounted filters. The OEM number is BC3Z-9N184-B.

The FD-4615 uses a threaded canister design that screws into the filter housing. This is the critical distinction — because the 2017 and newer trucks switched to a completely different bayonet-style quarter-turn design. The two are absolutely not interchangeable. Trying to install an FD-4625 into a 2011–2016 housing will not thread in and will leak fuel.

If you drive a 2011–2016 F250, F350, F450, or F550 with the 6.7 diesel, the FD-4615 is your filter. No exceptions.

2017–Present Ford 6.7 Powerstroke: FD-4625 / FD-4625-AA

Starting in 2017, Ford redesigned the fuel filter housing to use a bayonet-style quarter-turn connection. The current filter kit is the Motorcraft FD-4625-AA, which replaces the earlier FD-4625 and FD-4624. The OEM reference is HC3Z-9N184-C for the frame-rail element and HC3Z-9N184-J for the engine-mounted element.

This kit covers all 2017 Powerstroke fuel filter through current model year applications, including the 2019 F350 fuel filter and later Super Duty trucks. If you are shopping for a powerstroke fuel filter kit for a 2017 or newer truck, the FD-4625-AA is the only correct OEM answer.

Why OEM Motorcraft Filters Matter on the Powerstroke

The 6.7 Powerstroke runs a CP4.2 high-pressure fuel pump that operates at over 29,000 PSI. This pump is lubricated entirely by diesel fuel — there is no separate oil supply. When contaminated fuel reaches the CP4.2, metal shavings from the failing pump circulate through the entire fuel system, destroying every injector, the fuel rails, and the lines. A complete CP4.2 failure on a Ford Super Duty costs $8,000 to $12,000 to repair.

A genuine Motorcraft fuel filter uses Ford-spec media rated at 4 microns with 98 percent efficiency. Cheap aftermarket alternatives often claim similar ratings but use cellulose media that degrades faster and allows more water through — and water is the number one trigger for CP4.2 failure.

The filter is a $60 to $80 investment. The fuel system it protects is worth five figures. That math only works in one direction.
