Mopar vs Fleetguard vs Cheap Aftermarket Filters — What Ram Cummins Owners Need to Know Before Buying

Open any Ram truck forum and you will find the same question asked a hundred different ways. Should I buy Mopar filters from the dealer, Fleetguard filters from a diesel parts supplier, or save money with a $30 kit from Amazon? The price difference is massive — a Mopar fuel filter kit for a 6.7 Cummins runs $130 to $160, a Fleetguard fuel filter kit runs $100 to $130, and generic aftermarket sets sell for $25 to $40. Those numbers make the decision feel obvious. But the answer is not what most people expect.

The Secret Most Ram Owners Eventually Discover

Fleetguard is not an aftermarket brand. It is the filtration division of Cummins, now operating under Atmus Filtration Technologies. Cummins designed the 6.7L in your Ram. Fleetguard designed the filters for that engine. When Mopar needs fuel and oil filters for Cummins-powered Ram trucks, they buy them from Fleetguard.

This is not speculation. Ram owners on diesel forums have been cutting open filters for years and confirming it. The Mopar 68157291AA engine-mounted fuel filter carries a Fleetguard stamp inside the canister. The Mopar MO-285 oil filter and the Fleetguard LF16035 are physically identical — same StrataPore media, same bypass valve, same anti-drainback design. Even the tooling marks on the canisters match.

You are not choosing between two different filters. You are choosing between two different labels on the same filter, at two different prices.

Where Each Brand Wins on Price

The price gap is real and it consistently favors Fleetguard. Here is how the numbers typically break down for a Ram 2500 fuel filter service on a 2013–2018 truck:

The Mopar fuel filter kit with both 68157291AA and 68197867AA runs roughly $130 to $160 from a dealer or authorized retailer. The Fleetguard equivalent — FS53000 plus FS20089 — covers the same two positions for roughly $100 to $130. For 2019 and newer trucks needing the 68436631AA lower filter, the same Mopar-to-Fleetguard price gap holds.

On the oil side, the Mopar MO-285 typically costs $12 to $18 at retail. The Fleetguard LF16035 runs $10 to $15. The difference per filter is small, but across a year of maintenance on a truck doing 30,000 miles, buying Fleetguard instead of Mopar saves $40 to $60 — with zero compromise in filtration quality.

Either brand is a correct choice for your Ram 2500 or Ram 3500. The only wrong move is buying neither.

Why the $30 Amazon Filters Are a Gamble

The generic aftermarket kits flooding Amazon and eBay hit a price point that looks impossible to argue with. Thirty dollars for both fuel filters versus $130 for Mopar. That is a 75 percent savings. But what you save on the filter, you risk on the fuel system behind it.

The 6.7 Cummins runs a common-rail fuel injection system at pressures exceeding 29,000 PSI. At that pressure, the fuel itself is the only lubricant protecting the high-pressure pump internals. Particles as small as 4 microns can score pump surfaces and injector nozzles, generating metal debris that cascades through the entire fuel system. A single pump failure on a Ram 2500 Cummins runs $4,000 to $8,000 in parts and labor.

Genuine Mopar and Fleetguard fuel filters use NanoNet synthetic nanofiber media rated at 3 to 5 microns with 98 percent efficiency. They also separate 95 percent or more of free water from diesel fuel — critical because water passing through the high-pressure pump causes cavitation damage that is equally destructive.

Most cheap aftermarket filters use cellulose media rated at 10 to 20 microns. Some claim synthetic media but cannot produce independent lab testing to verify the claim. The filter threads on, it does not leak, and it looks like a real filter. But the particles doing the most damage are passing straight through it.

Building the Complete Filter Kit the Smart Way

The most cost-effective approach for mopar diesel maintenance is buying Fleetguard or Mopar filters in a complete kit rather than sourcing individual filters from different suppliers. A full 6.7 Cummins maintenance kit includes both fuel filters plus the 6.7 Cummins oil filter, and often ships with fresh O-rings and gaskets.

Here is the kit breakdown by year:

2010–2012 Ram 2500/3500: One 68157291AA fuel filter plus one MO-285 oil filter.

2013–2018 Ram 2500/3500/4500/5500: Both fuel filters — 68157291AA plus 68197867AA — and one MO-285 oil filter. This covers the 2014 Ram 2500, 2015 Ram 3500, 2016 Ram 2500, and 2018 Ram 2500 diesel.

2019–2024 Ram 2500/3500/4500/5500: Both fuel filters — 68157291AA plus 68436631AA — and one MO-285 oil filter. This covers the 2021 Ram 2500, 2023 Ram 3500, and 2024 Ram 2500.

Buying the complete Ram diesel filter set eliminates the risk of ordering mismatched filters and guarantees everything arrives together for a single maintenance session.

The Bottom Line

Mopar and Fleetguard are the same filter at different price points. Both protect your engine to factory specifications. Aftermarket filters save you a hundred dollars today and risk a fuel system repair that costs thousands tomorrow.

Buy whichever OEM brand fits your budget. Skip the generics. Change both fuel filters every time, not just the one under the hood.
